I set up the group when I realised it was far harder to see art-house films with subtitles compared to Hollywood blockbusters. I’m a big film fan (as well as being a scriptwriter and director) and at the time I’d just become a Dad – so it was harder for me to watch the films I wanted than ever before! Safe to say the group enabled me to see far more art-house films on the big screen than I’d have managed otherwise!

We aim to watch one art-house film a month, and so far we’ve seen: Where the Wild Things Are, Nowhere Boy, A Prophet, Father of my Children, Dogtooth, The Killer Inside Me, The Secret In My Eyes, The Social Network, Submarine, Source Code, The Skin I Live In, Drive, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Midnight in Paris, and Shame. Often we have over twenty people in attendance, the record being over 46 people, who came to see Shame in January 2012!

The group’s pretty informal and relaxed! We meet before the film, watch it, then have a glass of wine or a beer afterwards and chat. Nothing more complicated than that! There is one main group rule. It’s for deafies only – though members are very welcome to bring hearing friends and family along!
